NUM concerned over AngloGold fatalities
The National Union of Mineworkers on Wednesday said it was concerned about the number of fatalities that have occurred at AngloGold Ashanti’s mines.
Noting the fatality at the company’s Moab Khotsong Mine in the Carletonville region on Wednesday, the trade union said AngloGold Ashanti was becoming “the leading killer of mine workers through fatal accidents”.
“We call on the mineral resources department to enforce the law and ensure that thorough investigations are done,” said NUM general secretary Frans Baleni.
AngloGold Ashanti reported that a rock drill operator was fatally injured when a fall of ground occurred just before midday on Wednesday.
AngloGold Ashanti confirmed that the Department of Mineral Resource was onsite at Moab Khotsong Mine and was preparing to go underground to conduct an inspection.
“In the interim, the top part of the mine has been closed (this is where the accident took place) and blasting has been stopped until further notice,” the company said.
