South Africa. An  explosion caused damage at Mintek’s ConRoast smelting facility in Johannesburg.

This operational incident happened at a furnace when water from a water leak came in contact with molten material and caused the water to vapourise.

This then lead to minor explosions.

Superficial damage to the plant and minimal impact on production have occurred according to the preliminary incident investigation conducted.

There were no injuries and the estimated full repair cost to the operating infrastructure of the furnace is estimated at R1.5m.

The repair costs will be covered by both Mintek and Braemore and a majority of the funds will be targeted at the repair and replacement of electrical cables.

The furnace is anticipated to return to full production within 10 days.
