The Department of Labour will inspect the iron and steel sector next week, it said on Thursday.

Inspectors would focus on employers’ adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, said spokesperson Page Boikanyo.

The week-long inspections would be conducted in all provinces.

Similar inspections in the agriculture and forestry sectors uncovered “worrying levels” of non-compliance by some employers, he said.

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has called on businesses, labour, the government and communities to make the health and safety of employees their responsibility.

He has also insisted on workplace health and safety committees that act in the interest of workers.
