Trouble at Durban’s Moses Mabhida stadiumSouth Africa. Durban’s Moses Mabhida stadium, expected to host the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup semifinals, might miss the deadline for its completion as Labour Department officials on Monday issued prohibition notices that immediately halted activities on the construction site.

Labour deputy director-general Siyanda Zondeki on Monday took a delegation to the site and found that it was unsafe for workers. She found it “unacceptable” that workmen were not using safety harnesses when climbing scaffolds, and described it as a “rampant” contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

This malpractice claimed 16 lives out of the 76 accidents recorded within the construction industry between April 2006 and July 2007.
