Simmer and Jack Mines on Wednesday reported that a fall of ground at its Buffelsfontein Gold Mine in the North West Province on Tuesday has claimed the life of all three employees who were trapped underground.

Mine overseer, Johannes Hendrik Naude (43) of Klerksdorp and shift bosses Adriaan JP Zietsman (37) of Orkney and Steven Grobbelaar (24), also of Klerksdorp, died following a fall of ground that took place at the mine’s Number Five Shaft, on 27 level.

The men were engaged in a routine inspection at the time of the incident.

Simmers said the mine’s Number Five Shaft remains closed pending an investigation into the incident.
