SA environmental officials are explaining implementation of the Waste Act at nine provincial forums in Nov-Dec 2010. The Waste Act came into effect in July 2009.

Directors of Pollution and Waste Management, of the Department of Environmental Affairs, are hosting a road show of presentations in nine major centres to ‘popularise’ the Waste Act, from Oct 28 to Dec 9.

Officials are talking to operators and officials involved in each of the sub sectors provided for in the Waste Act, including waste generation, separation, collection, transport, handling, re-use, recycling, treatment, and disposal.

Waste officers conference

DEA had already launched Waste Khoro, a new waste management officers conference, in September, attended by state officials at national, provincial and municipal level. Authorities had reached some consensus on implementation and enforcement of the Waste Act and Waste Regulations.

DEA is expected to explain standardised waste handling and reporting procedures, including registration, licensing, inspection and enforcement procedures, on the road show.
