Worker Dies At Amandelbult

South Africa. Anglo Platinum said that a worker had been killed at its Amandelbult mine on Monday.

Mr Simon Tebele spokesman of Anglo Platinum said that the death occurred at 3 AM local time, but could not provide further details on whether production had been affected and if the mine would be shut down because of the accident.

The National Union of Mineworkers urged Anglo Platinum to pull up its safety socks, after the latest accident brought the number of workers killed at Amandebult this year to 6. The union said the total number of mineworkers killed on duty so far this year had risen to 121.

South Africa has a bad safety record for underground mining. The government routinely shuts down operations temporarily after deaths so companies can probe mine safety or make repairs.

The NUM has called on members to stay away from work each time a mineworker is killed in South Africa’s mines. A total of about 11,000 workers stopped work at DRD Gold’s Blyvoor mine and Harmony Gold’s Elandsrand mine last week to mourn 2 workers who died at the mines.
